why is the 9th day of Dhul-Hijjah special? This is the day of Arafat; for more information, we recommend the article: Living the Legacy of Abraham.
In Al-Saheehayn, it Was reported from ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that a Jew said: “O Leader of the Believers, there is a verse in your Book, which if it had been disclosed to us to us Jews, we would have taken it as an ‘Eid (celebration).” ‘Umar asked: “Which verse?” He replied:
“Today I have made your religion complete for you, and I have completed My grace upon you, and I have pleased You with Islam as a religion.” [Al-Ma’idah 5:3]
‘Umar said: “We know on what day and in what place this was disclosed to us by the Prophet. It was when he was standing at ‘Arafat on a Friday.”
Yawm ‘Arafat (the day of ‘Arafah),
Yawm al-Nahr (the day of sacrifice) and al-Ayyam Tashriq (three days after Yawm al-Nahr) are ‘Eid (holidays) for us, the people of Islam,” stated the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). We’re eating and drinking these days. [The authors of al-Sunan reported this.]
It was reported that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab said: “This (referring to the verse: ‘Today, I have made it complete…’) was revealed on Friday, the Day of ‘Arafat, and both of them – praise be to Allah – are ‘Eids for us.”
It is a day on which Allah has sworn an oath.
The Almighty does not swear by anything insignificant except that which is mighty. Yawm’ Arafat is the “witnessed day” mentioned in the verse:
“And by a witness and a witness!” [Al-Buruj 85:3]
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated: “The day of witnessing is Friday, the day of the promised day is the Day of Resurrection, and the witnessed day is the day of ‘Arafat.” [Tirmidhi narrates, although al-Albaani classifies it as saheeh]
It is the “odd” (odd number, Witr) by which Allah swore in the verse:
“By the even and the odd!” [Al-Fajr 89:3]
Ibn’ Abbas said: “The even one is the Day of al-Adha (i.e. the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah) and the odd one is the Day of ‘Arafat (i.e. the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah).” [‘Ikrimah and al-Dahhak also agreed with this.]
This day’s fast represents a two-year reconciliation
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that on the day of ‘Arafat, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was questioned regarding fasting. “It atones for the sins of the past year and the next year,” he stated. [Told by a Muslim]
It is mustahab (strongly advised) for people who are not doing the Hajj to observe this fast. Since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not fast on the day of Arafat, it is not Sunnah for people who perform the Hajj to do so. He reportedly refused to observe a fast on that day. It is mustahab (highly recommended) for those who are not performing Hajj. For those who perform Hajj, it is not Sunnah to fast on the day of ‘Arafat, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not fast on that day of ‘Arafat. It was reported that Forbade observed a fast during the day.

On this day, Allah established a covenant with Adam’s offspring
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reportedly stated: “Allah made a covenant with the children of Adam in Na’maan (‘Arafat).” Ibn’ Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) made this statement. All of Adam’s descendants were formed from their loins by Allah, who then laid them out in front of Him and asked.
“Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we have witnessed it.” To clarify, so that you may not, you should say on the Day of Resurrection, “Indeed, we were heedless of this.” Or lest you should say, “Only our fathers worshipped idols before, and we are their posterity after them. Do You destroy us because of what the adherents of falsehood have done?” [al-A’raf 7:172-173].”
[Narrated by Ahmad and classed as saheeh by al-Albani]
For those in ‘Arafat, it is the day of pride, release from the Fire, and sin forgiveness
According to Saheeh Muslim, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated: “On the day of ‘Arafat, Allah Rescues souls from the Fire.” This was reported by ‘Aa’ishah (may Allah be pleased with him). “What do these people want?” He asks the angels, displaying His pride.
It was reported in the narration of Ibn’ Umar that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allah expresses His pride to His angels at the time of ‘Isha on the Day of ‘Arafat, about the people of ‘Arafat. He says: ‘Look at my servants who have come unkempt and dirty.'” [Narrated by Ahmad and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani]
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was questioned Performing Saum (fasting) on the day of Arafat in 1250, As reported by Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him). “It is a reconciliation for the sins of the Last year and this year,” he declared. Imam Al-Nawwawi’s Riyad-us-Saliheen, Chapter 227, “The Excellence of Observing Saum on the Day of ‘Arafat, ‘Ashura,’ and Tasu’a (i.e. the 9th of Muharram)” [Muslim]
