Australian former world champion cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to a less serious offense connected with the death of his wife, another Olympian, Melissa Hoskins. It occurred on December 30, 2023, outside their home in Adelaide; which is when Hoskins was run over by Dennis. She succumbed to her injuries on December 3, 2023, after being admitted to one of the hospitals.
Rohan Dennis will reappear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on December 10, 2024, after he pleaded guilty to an aggravated charge of creating the likelihood of harm. This charge has a maximum prison term of seven years. He was once charged with more severe offenses, including causing death through dangerous driving and reckless driving, offenses which attract a maximum prison term of 15 years when convicted of. However, these charges were dropped under a plea bargain.
The court trial showed that either Rohan Dennis had knowledge of that, or acted with gross negligence when driving his Volkswagen Amar Highline SUV with Hoskins on the hood. The court said that there was an aggravating factor in that the offender and the victim were a couple.
The incident took place outside their home in the Medindie suburb of Adelaide. It is indicated that Melissa Hoskins was flung from the car bonnet when Dennis was driving, and she got seriously injured. She was later transferred to the next hospital but succumbed to the injuries.
Dennis is out on bond and expected to be sentenced on January 24th 2025. Hoskins’ life being placed at risk is acknowledged by his guilty plea. Even though she died due to his actions, the court noted that the defendant was in a manner that endangered her life.
Rohan Dennis is known for his fantastic achievements as a cyclist of the Commonwealth Games, the Olympics, and championships in world cycling time trials. A member of the professional biking fraternity for years now, he clinched silver medals at London Olympics 2012 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Melissa Hoskins was a professional cyclist of Australian nationality, and in the course of her cycling career, she served in the Olympics and came out winners of the world title in Track cycling in 2015. The couple was married in 2018 and was blessed with two children.
