Beyond Barry Island: Laura Aikman’s Journey Beyond “Gavin & Stacey”

While the 2019 “Gavin & Stacey” Christmas special sent the airwaves abuzz with nostalgic waves, fans were left worried that Laura Aikman was done for good to leave the world of sit-coms, the curve of her career, however is a story far removed. The marvelous actress with the cheerful Sonia in this Welsh show has made waves from the sandy beaches into and out of which the very talented lady was thrown like a ball.

Laura Aikman‘s story, on the other hand started on the stage. Feeding her passion for theater at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama she had an opportunity to receive a classical theater education. This early training helped to give her a very good grounding in her role and the stage. The leap to television was in 2007, where the character of Sonia in Gavin & Stacey was taken.

The heartwarming sitcom that rubbed two families from opposite ends of the UK together became a national sensation. This paper therefore focuses on Laura Aikman’s characterization of Sonia, Nessa’s best friend who is a loyal and smart woman. She added spunk, humor and sincerity to the character and made her very easy to like. Despite of this, Laura Aikman had not limited her dreams to “Gavin & Stacey”.

She tried to get parts that would show her versatility and step out of her comedic roles and try dramatic roles. She last featured in the BBC’s highly-rated medical drama, Casualty which premiered realistic scenes in 2009. An example of Laura Aikman’s skill in portraying a complicated medical condition patient and actress able to navigate the emotional topography and the dynamics of the human condition.

This new change of genre was continued in 2011 with the help of the miniseries “The Shadow Line.” In this crime thriller Laura Aikman played a police officer who finds himself in the midst of a dangerous investigation. The performance was highly acclaimed where she depicted a lot of energy and passion, also with emotional depth.

However, Laura Aikman has not abandoned comedy entirely since she tested her drama skills. In 2013 she featured in the British comedy series The Job Lot in which she played Trish a funny and sarcastic shop employee selling goods at rock bottom prices.

The show gave her the opportunity to show off her comedic talents and deliver the best one-liners. But the urge to diversify her portfolio did not wane for her. In the year 2017, she acted for the character of Agnes Strickland in the historical drama series called Victoria.

Queen Victoria the historical drama afforded Laura Aikman the opportunity to portray a character of the past and a multi dimensional character. Recent years have witnessed Aikman entertaining people still and amazing them with her talent. In 2020, she was part of the miniseries ” Adult Material, which narrates the story of one woman and her work in the adult film business.

Her role as a woman entrapped in this world which has raised many eyebrows received much appreciation. Last year she acted in the BBC One drama series Archie, which is a drama revolving around the themes of bereavement. Laura Aikman displayed good acting skills as a mother who lost her child in a tragic accident, thus bringing out the feelings and emotions of the audience.

The 2019 Gavin & Stacey reunion special was a lovelyrefresh of the character of Sonia and how Aikman portrayed her. The chemistry between the actors was still just as great as before and the audience welcomed back the favorite characters. But the special also raised questions as to whether Laura Aikman was ready to step out of the world of sit-coms.

This fear is, however, misplaced. This paper reveals that Laura Aikman has successfully outlined a pattern as far as her artistic career is concerned. The cheerful and perky Sonia in “Gavin & Stacey” and the transforming actress in dramatic series, has made her a strong contender in the world of British television and film. Thus she keeps on striving for new opportunities and trying out something new in her career, one can only expect her career to bloom even further in the future.
